M was created by English
singer Robin Scott.
In 1969 he released the album Woman From The Warm Grass to little success. Scott managed the band Roogalator and formed the Do It label (which in the early 80's handled acts such as Adam And The Ants). In 1978 he moved to France where he produced, among several other bands, The Slits and it was his time here where he created M - signify the Paris Metro signs. Their first single Moderne Man failed to set the charts on fire. It was however Pop Muzik, their second single which became a worldwide smash (US and Australian #1, UK #2) thanks to Scott's infectious beat and Brigit Novik's backing vocals. As a marketing ploy, some copies of the single featured both a and b-sides on the one playing side. An album was released and charted well. M's second album produced some minor hits but by then M had hung up his synthesiser and moved onto other projects. |
