Sylvester James, arguably disco's first openly gay performer, was born in 1947 into an upper-middle class family in Los Angeles. He began as a gospel singer before working with groups such as The Cockettes and The Hot Band before commencing his solo career.

His first album was on the Fantasy label and produced two big disco tracks, the Ashford and Simpson penned track "Over and Over" and "Down Down Down."

He had a huge international disco hit in 1978 with the gay anthem "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". He followed this with the hit single "Dance (Disco Heat)".

Sylvester died on December 16, 1988 from AIDS.
