Irene Cara was raised in New
York City and began acting and singing at an early age.
When only eight years old, she appeared on Broadway in the 1967 musical
Maggie Flynn starring Shirley Jones. She also appeared on a number of
television programs including The Electric Company, Roots 2 in
1979 and
The
Guyanna Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.
In 1980, her singing and acting career hit mega-stardom with her role in Fame
as well as her singing the title song.
The song won the best Oscar
award and
she went on to receive Grammy nominations for Best New Female Artist and
Best New Pop Artist Grammy nominations and a Golden Globe
nomination for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical. She was named
"Top New Single Artist by Billboard Magazine and was awarded Most
Promising Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist by Cashbox.
She also had a Top 40 hit
with Out
Here on My Own, also from the movie.
In 1983, she again topped the charts with
her co-written and Oscar winning song Flashdance...What
a Feelin from the movie Flashdancea song she co-wrote that
won another Oscar, and Cara won a couple of Grammys for her contributions to
the soundtrack.
