Colin Mockett is an award-winning journalist and writer, a less-than acclaimed actor, a noted performer, experienced MC and an accomplished, if reluctant, comedian. He's also a theatre producer, critic, director and event manager. Born in London, Colin emigrated to Geelong, Australia, in 1979. For seven years he
owned and operated Geelong's only English Fish & Chip Shop. He continued off-campus studies at Deakin University, gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Social Science (1991). Colin married singer Shirley Power in December 1990. After winning two national 'best news story' journalism awards while writing for the Geelong News (1991 and 1992), Colin became a freelance writer, producing articles and working as a casual journalist, sub-editor and editor for several Geelong publications. He produced, edited and published That's Entertainment in Geelong magazine, which led eventually to this web site. Colin made his stage debut in 1989 as a scarecrow in Geelong Rep's 'Worzel Gummidge'. Among several other forgettable performances, he was Constable Elbow in Shakespeare's 'Measure For Measure'. With Shirley, Colin researched and wrote a series of live-on-stage 'musical documentaries' which tell the life stories of Robert Burns and Thomas Moore and the 'musical history' of Australia's pioneer women. These led to the writing and production of a whole series of musical shows. Colin wrote and created the 'Englishman, Irishman Scotsman Live!' stage show to add a touch of humour to Australia's National Celtic Festival, held in Geelong. The show put a real Englishman, Irishman & Scotsman on stage telling jokes about the other's nationalities. Colin played the Englishman. This show led to Colin gaining bookings as a comedian and MC, and spawned the 'Drop Of A Hat' production company. Colin created the 'Pivot City' musical which tells Geelong's history
- and this in turn led to
a series of requests to 'recreate' historical characters for festivals
and special occasions. The historical re-enactment experience also led to Colin producing Geelong's 2001 Centenary of Federation celebration - which started with a 1901 re-enactment then went on to become an all-day non-stop free outdoor concert featuring the best of Geelong's entertainers. In turn, this led to the production of other big shows. Always ready for a challenge, Colin built this web page without template software, but with his bare hands following a 6-hour (2 evenings) adult-training course from tutor Keith Maxwell. It was later tweaked by Ed Dolista from Comic Genius Productions Colin cycles - and recycles - whenever possible, collects books on humour, enjoys reading, rummaging in second-hand shops and being married to Shirley.
He hates hypocrisy, Hollywood and what Rupert Murdoch has done to the world's media. |
